No, the blog tour I’m participating in this month isn’t dangerous. Perilous is the name of Tamara Hart Heiner’s debut novel. She provided me with a PDF version of the book to review for this blog tour.
Jaci Rivera has plans for her sophomore year-- to make the honor roll and eat too much pizza with her best friends, Callie and Sara. Her biggest concern is Amanda, the pushy girl who just moved into town. What Jaci doesn't plan for is catching a notorious robber red-handed, or being kidnapped. The desperate thief drags her and her friends 2,000 miles across the Canadian border. Then Jaci finds something out about her family. Something which irrevocably connects her to their kidnapper, and makes her question their chances of escape.
Perilous starts out with a bang—literally—with the discovery of a body in the prologue. It slows down briefly as we get to know the main characters and how they end up in a dangerous situation. From there on out, Tamara takes us on a roller-coaster ride of tension and conflict on a several levels: between the girls and their captors, between the detective and the thieves who kidnapped the girls, and between the girls themselves.
Tamara heightens the tension by showing the readers not only what the girls must deal with as they flee their captors, survive off the good will of strangers, and battle the elements on their long trek home; but also by the activity of the detective as he wades through the false information flung at him by corrupt police officers on the take from the thieves. A couple of surprise twists towards the end top off the tension.
Perilous is a fun read that’s hard to put down. It makes you want to flip the pages even faster to keep up with the adventure of these teens and keeps you guessing until the very end.
